The B-17 Flying Fortress was the United States’ workhorse heavy bomber during World War II. Most famous for their Eighth Air Force daylight strategic bombing raids on Germany, some B-17s continued their military careers with the United States Air Force as weather ships, target drones and rescue planes. In civilian life these big bombers hauled cargo, starred in movies, sprayed crops and fought forest fires. Today, only a handful survive. This Fortress flew military cargo and VIPs during the final month of WWII. Inter-mountain Aviation used this bomber for fire fighting and to develop the Fulton “Skyhook.” Completely restored and in flying condition, this aircraft wears the colors of the 390th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force.
