Considered the most successful military transport since the Douglas C-47 Skytrain, the C-130 is flown by more than sixty nations worldwide, in dozens of variations. One fact that makes the big, four engine aircraft so successful is that it can land and takeoff from dirt air strips in rough, remote areas. Called the most versatile and enduring transport aircraft, C-130s carry troops, vehicles and armament into hostile areas. They drop paratroopers and supplies from the sky. They serve as airborne and ground refuelers, and provide emergency medical evacuation and humanitarian relief. Built in 1965, this WC-130E served primarily as a weather reconnaissance aircraft and remains flyable today.
